TIME Barbie

Barbie may be the best-known toy in the world. She’s a fashion trendsetter, a pop-culture influencer, and a financial powerhouse for Mattel, with nearly $1.5 billion in sales in 2022. Now the 11.5-inch icon has ascended to Hollywood superstardom. Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, Barbie became the most successful film of 2023, crossing the $1 billion box office barrier in just 17 days. The critically acclaimed movie both celebrates and skewers the dolls complicated history, taking her (and Ken) on an entertaining and enlightening journey. Since her introduction in 1959 (thanks to the visionary Ruth Handler), Barbie has been a lightning rod for critics, particularly feminists, who claim she perpetuates sexist stereotypes and impossible beauty standards for girls. But legions of fans—and Mattel executives—point out that Barbie is also an aspirational figure. This special issue of TIME looks at Barbies genesis and legacy, her enduring popularity, and the lasting impact of the film.
